Designing user-focused and accessible interfaces.

MediCare’s patient portal served everyone from teenagers to 90-year-olds — but only worked well for the middle. We rebuilt it for every age and ability.

The challenge

Healthcare can’t have a learning curve

Small text, low contrast and jargon-heavy labels meant older patients called the helpline for tasks the portal was supposed to solve. Missed appointments and unfilled prescriptions were the human cost of bad contrast ratios.

The approach

Accessible by default, elegant by design

We designed to WCAG AA as a floor, not a ceiling: 18px minimum type, plain-language labels tested with seniors, full keyboard flows and a high-contrast mode. Then real patients — aged 19 to 87 — tested every release candidate.

Deliverables

What shipped

  • Accessible portal redesign, WCAG AA verified
  • Plain-language content overhaul across 40+ screens
  • Component library with accessibility annotations
“My 84-year-old mother books her own appointments now. I did not think any redesign could do that — Quillmark proved me wrong.”
